Tastes from Home with Frito-Lay Recipe Contest and Give away!

 Tastes from Home with Frito-Lay
Recipe Contest and Giveaway

These chips were inspired by popular American regional cuisine and include:
1.       Northeastern U.S. – Lay’s Honey Mustard
2.       Midwestern U.S. – Lay’s Creamy Garden Ranch
3.       Northwestern U.S. – Lay’s Balsamic Sweet Onion
4.       Southwestern U.S. – Lay’s Chipotle Ranch
5.       Southeastern U.S. – Lay’s Cajun Herb & Spice

·         All of the Lay's Regional Flavored potato chips are made with all natural ingredients and cooked in healthier oils, like corn and sunflower oils, which contain 80% or more of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat - the "good fats." They also contain 0 grams of trans fats per serving!
·         There’s also less sodium in them than you might think – a 1-oz serving of our Lay’s Regional Flavored potato chips contains less salt than a plain bagel!

Although I'm not a big potato chip eater, the two flavors I would like best are the Midwestern US Lay's Creamy Garden Ranch and the Southeastern US Lay's Cajun Herb and Spice.

Originally being from the Midwest, corn has always been a big favorite in my family.  I remember getting fresh corn late in the summer from Ethel's fruit market which no longer exists here in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago.  And while we never made chowder with it, I do remember how great it always tasted.  So here is my take on a slow cooked Midwest corn chowder.  It's great in that you can throw everything into the crock pot and just walk away.  In a few hours you'll have a wonderful corn chowder which will bring back the memories of summer.

Slow Cooked Midwest Corn Chowder

1 can (14.5 oz) creamed corn
1 C frozen whole kernel corn, thawed
1 1/2 C (12 oz can) evaporated skim milk
1/2 C fat free half and half
2 C diced cooked potatoes
1/2 C chopped red onion
3 pieces turkey bacon, cooked and crumbled
1/4-1/3 C mashed potato flakes
salt and pepper to taste

Spray slow cooker with cooking spray.  Combine corns, evaporated milk, half and half.  Stir in potatoes and onion.  Add bacon and mix well to combine.

Cover and cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 4 hours.  Potatoes should be fork tender when done.  Add potato flakes to thicken chowder when potatoes are cooked through.  Salt and pepper to taste.

United Pet Group Survey Win!!

So back in March I was notified by the United Pet Group that I'd won a drawing for $50 worth of pet products from doing a survey.  Which is totally awesome as I have both a dog and a cat.  They originally told me they'd ship it to me in 6-8 weeks.

It finally came today!!  UPS dropped off three huge boxes this morning.

As you can see its quite a selection of things.  Several kinds of pet shampoos, pet wipes, cleaners, treats, toys, litter box liners.

This is something Miss Rosie and Seven will quite enjoy.  Although the screaming sling monkey isn't quite Rosie's cup of tea....she ran when we slung it across the room and it screamed 3 times.  Maybe it will grow on her.  :)

Science Diet Healthy Mobility Food!!

So the last post was quite a while ago...but since then we've changed Miss Rosie's food to the new healthy mobility from Science diet.  It's made such a difference.  No more limping or problems with arthritis.  :)  Which is a definite plus.  She goes for long walks now with out getting sick or having problems walking afterwards.  It's like she's a brand new dog.

Now if I can just convince her that jogging when you're 10 isn't the best idea.  :)

Sad Day today

So today was kind of a sad day....

Took Miss Rosie Dickens to the vet because she needed some shots and a pedicure.  Found out that she has cataracts in both eyes.  The vet said that when its light out, seeing anything would look like you were trying to look at things underwater.  You see shapes and colors and movement but aren't able to see a lot of detail.

The really sad thing is that if there is no light she can't see at all.  That's pretty upsetting.  So I'm working on putting night lights all over the house.  I wouldn't want her to run into anything if something got moved.  She normally doesn't wander at night but just in case I'll feel better having night lights.

The upside is that her sniffer is working much better than it ever did.  So it is true that when one sense dims the others do compensate for it.  And the vet said other than the vision, which won't get worse she's in great shape.  Very active, good muscle tone, shiny coat....we just have to be aware that she can't see when its dark.

Does anyone else have this issue?  Any ideas?

POM prize

Back in January, I won one of those POM facebook comment contests.  So if in doubt definitely enter those comment contests....you might just win.  It took about a month but they did finally send my prize.  Here's a pic of what I won:

I'm planning on making some granita with this.  I'll post pics after it's done.  :)

Paczkis from Continental Bakery

So we picked up Paczkis yesterday at Continental.  It's in Mt Prospect.  Last night they were open 24 hrs because of the Paczkis.  As you can see from the pics.....they didn't last real long.

I got Reese's Peanut Butter cup, Mocha Latte, Irish Cream Mint and Key Lime Pie.  They're quite yummy.  :)  And here's a pic showing just how thick they are....with a stick of butter for reference....(I'm baking sugar cookies for the boyfriend later).
